Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere in Winterton on Sea that we could rent for at least a year, my husband and I are relocating to Norfolk and are looking for a property with a minimum of 2 bedrooms. If anyone can recommend anywhere that would be lovely.
Thanks

Peter Douglas Tripp of Winterton, RIP Tuesday 16 February 2010. Much loved and much missed loving husband of Maureen Ann Tripp, and wonderful father to Jonathan, Stephanie and Chloe. Your "Blondy" is trying to take good care of Mum, remembering how you liked things to be done, and misses you unbelivably. I do know this isn't the End of the Road (God told me). Role on summer so my new puppy can have such fun on the beach bliss! Who needs abroad with a beach so natural on our door steps, christmas morning on a empty beach happy, happy.

The Norfolk County Highways Commiittee at County Hall selects the routes during the summer. The Parish Council can only make recommendations -- which we have --- but as I explained in the Newsletter its down to them. The PC has not altered the routes..

I read with interest, the comment regarding the Gritting of the highways in and around the village, but what i find bemusing is the fact that it will take untill next year to make a desion on the routeing ( Past the post office ) the powers that be all bang on about health and safety!!!!!!
Why cant this be sorted, with one phone call to the Highways department?
And who changed the route in the first place? the gritters use to grit outside the postoffice.

I visited your lovely village in September 2009. I have been researching my mother's family who were Larners. They were all builders, the furtherest I have traced back is Thomas Larner born 1751 and lived in Winterton on Sea. I was shown great kindness by the people i met in the village and was even taken round to see a lady who was a Larner and looked very much like my great aunt Beat! Alas I have got no further with my search for more of my Larners and i would appreciate any information that anyone may have.
Australia is a long way from Winterton on Sea and I can't see me getting back there. But it was lovely to stand in your village and think that was where our family came from. Thank you once again for your kindness. Email: jennybunn51@yahoo.com.au

I have been visiting WInterton Valley Estate for over 20 years and last year purchased a chalet there so I am looking forward to spending many weeks there this year! Love the friendly people in the village, the FIsherman's Return where if I am on my own only on a very few occassions have I not met people to chat to, the quiet, the seals and the country! I first visited Norfolk in the early 1970s.

RING LOST ON WINTERTON DUNES
After a energetic game of frisby on the dunes I realised that my ring was missing. It has huge sentimental value - given to me on the birth of my daughter Lola.

The ring is white gold with a square moonstone - engraved inside with LOLA and her date of birth 06.01.01.

If anyone finds it please do get in contact - sally@wellsmackereth.com

Whilst doing family history research I have come across some history of Winterton. I was hoping to be able to add it to your website. But you don't have a history page! Is that a bit remiss ?

Would be really nice if the history page could be a Wiki (at least in part), so that everyone who finds info can add it.

Meanwile, I'll add what I have to the Wikipedia entry for Winterton.

The Charity run 365 days a year by volunteers , receives no grant or subsidy and is supported entirely by public donation
We have to prioritise and sadly flags are not high on the list
at almost £40 each ,but the Union Jack was replaced at the end of last month after being frayed by persistently high winds over the last few weeks Perhaps our critic would care to donate the cost of the other one .We'll see.

Winterton on sea is a wonderful place i have visited many times, the last time i was here though i saw a odd grumpy looking old man in a dark coat, dark baseball cap in a motobility scooter chasing a wild rabbit down the road. A big thank you for the laugh funniest thing i've seen in some time, i dont know if he managed to kill it or not he did look quite angry??

And whats the deal with the ripped and damaged british flags, i served queen & country so thats a bit odd too??

Apart from that "friendly" wonderful place love it!!

Less moaning, more tolerance! Winterton's plenty big enough for everyone to enjoy. What's so special about it is the community spirit and the lack of too many rules. My children love playing with the dog on the beach and vice versa. I've never seen any dog poo on the beach and we've been over 10 times on holiday. They also enjoy watching the planes fly and hopefully one day, they will have hobbies of their own rather than Playstation. Anyone got any info on Xmas fete as we're on holiday then and would love to attend.

Back to the post from the Laytons concerning the Anglia In Bloom awards.
Excuse me Mr & Mrs Layton but surely any constructive comments or queries you have should be directed to the judging panel. I am sure if you asked the judges they would give you the reasons for their decision. Maybe you are missing the point somewhere. Its the taking part that counts brings the community together is of benefit to a lot of people and winning is purely the icing on the cake. Its sad when a sour grapes attitude spoils such an achievement. Well done Winterton the work is worth it and appreciated by many!

HI There
My brother Derek Eke moved to your village a couple of years ago, he recently died in July, I came down to see my sister in law Chris this weekend to attend a remorial service, I just wanted to say thank you to Father Adrian and all the people involved in the beautiful service. Although it was an emotional time for me it was all so lovely and the candles that was lit was a touching thought. Thank you also to all the people who have been so kind and supportive to Chris and her daughter Sian, in their time of sorrow.

I wouldn't worry to much about the Houses on the Edge of the Dunes......a good old breeze of wind from the East will soon demolish them to Rubble, they aren't exactly too well built!!!....that's if the Builder can sell them first!

We have a house in the village and would live there all the time if we could. I'm Norfolk born, bred and brought up. I get dreadfully homesick every time I have to return to the The Cotswolds (They are lovely, but the people aren't half as friendly)
As far as dogs are concerned, I think the main problem is owners who don't clear up. The dunes always seem to be worse than the beach. Banning them is not fair on the owners who do act responsibly. But apart from rubbing lazy owners' noses in it I don't know what the solution is.

Read with interest the below comment, exactly my thoughts, not to sure who the Builder is.
I agree with Jimmy, has this site not been subject to visits from the Local Building Inspector?
The workmanship is terrible, and as for the outer-wall around the site, its not level or anything else on the site come to that.
Why couldn't the Houses have been made to be built like the ones being erected on the old Thermglow site, these look very well built, very much in keeping with the character of the Village.

With Regard to the below e-mail from Chell, nice to hear some positive comments about our lovely Village.
I must agree with her though, about the Houses on the Edge of the Dunes, has anybody been up there lately and had a look at them....because i think the Local building authorities ought too!!!
How Have these been allowed to proceed?
The walls aren't straight and that's just the start of it, i have never seen such bad workmanship, and as Chell states they don't fit in at all with the Local surroundings...Surley the Village council has a say in this?

To Valerie Easter.
Your brother was probably killed on Winterton beach at the end of the war clearing mines. My Uncle 'Bobby' Howsham was also killed doing this job at the age of 21.
He is buried at Caister in a military grave and this is probably where your brother is buried. We found an article in the local paper on microfisch at Gt Yarmouth library. At least I think it was Great Yarmouth, it was some years ago. I hope this information helps. (molex@supanet.com)

Hi i just wanted to add some nice comment's about your lovely village!
We have stayed a couple of times a year for the last few years and feel the local community is so kind and understanding of our dogs and their sometimes grumpyness!.
As for dogs not being allowed on the beach and in the pub it is so nice to go and stay somewhere that we doggy owners are not made to feel unwelcome or unclean, and i certainly would not allow my dog to sit on the seats or eat off the tables and agree this is not pleasant for anyone.
I however must agree with the comment about the new house's at the end of the dunes what an eyesore they dont blend with the surroundings it was a shame they were given planning permission they spoil an area of beauty.

I agree with Joan & Trevor comments below to some degree, but as you most rightly say, they probably did not take in the Village as a whole, and yes we have had a long Dry spell of weather witch didnt help, and as for Hanging baskets, well we can all do that if you have the money.Winterton put in time and effort, and this is what the Judges see, not just shooting off to the Garden Center & placing up a load of Baskets!!!!
The one area i do agree with that needs tiding up though is the Village shop, what an eye sore, how is it that they can get away with leaving rubish, trollies, pallets etc outside, if this was outside a privite redensent, no doubt we would recive a letter from the Local council to remove it prompto!!!
or are we frightend to upset them?

Joan and Trevor Laytons comments regarding Wintertons In-Bloom achievements would appear to be based on a 'hidden agenda' but of course that is for them to know and us to guess. One wonders what the Judges would think of their comments as it is they who make the awards and not the village so it clearly calls into question their judgement. In the years that the village has taken part in Anglia in Bloom we have always taken notice the Judges comments and for the Laytons information we were advised not to use hanging baskets on lamposts as in their opinion these should only be used in Cities and Towns and were not in keeping with villages so we never use them.I can only assume that regarding some of their other comments they would do well to clean their car windows or go to Specsavers !

We have just had a wonderful 5 day holiday in Winterton. We really enjoyed the beach, the dunes and the village. To find a pub that is genuinely dog friendly was a big bonus (cannot understand why some people think dogs are unhygenic. If they were, I am sure that dog owners would be ill all the time, but most are some of the healthiest people I know!). This was our first visit and we have already booked our cottage for 2010. See you all then. Feast, the collie cross, sends lots of licks to Ty.

Joan and Trevor Layton's comments regarding Winterton's achievement in receiving the In Bloom Gold award etc sounds like sour grapes or the very least they need to get a life and maybe join a local community initiative and then they would understand that these community projects are for FUN. I help set up the Winterton Village In Bloom some years ago for the benefit of the local community to have fun and retain cohesion within the Parish. This is still achieved today thanks to the hard work and generosity of local residents and business. If they win an award then it's a bonus, next year some other village will win it and rightly so and you will not hear any moans from this quarter. Well done Winterton In Bloom team.

In reply to Joan & Trevor Laytons comments about our much deserved Gold Award in Anglia in Bloom along with Best Large Village and Gold in Gt Yarmouth in Bloom sharing Best Village with Filby, I appreciate they only drove through our village and therefore did not take in the full picture of our community. The RHS judges were here over a two hour period. They were acquainted with the various floral displays. They were impressed with the conservation area Duffles Pond, the allotments, especially the Ptimary School plot which earned them a special award. The composting area, the village green, the dunes ,the village hall and the Church. An Environmental Award was given to the Village. The total points scored placed us in a GOLD status.

We read with interest, it the local EDP, that Winterton on Sea had won the Gold award.....as we often drive through the Village off Filby on our way to our Son's, and my Husband always comments on how wonderful the Village looks, we thought we would take a tour through to Winterton...How disappointed we were!!!! How ever could Winterton have gained such a prestige award, we didn't see One hanging basket on any Lamp post through the Village, the Village green, what a mess, a couple of trees, look on there last legs, Pavements like patch work quilts, i think a shop called Loomes, on the corner, lookes more like a scrap dealers out side.......Come on Winterton, if you have the Brass Neck to accept an award as stated above, you must do better......so back to the Drive through Filby...

With regard to some of the below comments, Winterton should adopt the polices of most of the Country, Dogs should be baned from the Beach in the Summertime, and allowed on only in winter. This would then stop all the moaning about Dogs doing this and Dogs doing that.

I can assure you that if this was inspected and followed up on, this would be a Health issue, and would be acted on,

Great to find this website, it has brought back many good memories. As a small child Winterton-on-sea used to be our family holiday late 60s-70s, From what I remember my parents hired a bungalow that was set amongst some trees with a drive going to a house behind, I remember the owl that used to keep us awake each night. I also remember the chip shop and the lovely walk to the fantastic beach. I must pay avisit soon

My family and me have just spent a week at Winterton. Pros: lovely village/pub/local people/scenery/walks/sea and sand.
Cons: the latter above spoilt by an allowance of dogs and for them to run where they like on the beach; some owners of which think its acceptable for their dog to use it like a toilet (urination on sandcastles seems perfectly ok by some). Until there is a control on dogs (and owners?) i.e kept on a lead (the dog!) i will not return or recommend what could be a superb seaside village.

I have lived in Winterton for 3 years. I cannot understand why the model flying is causing a problem. It's all supervised and insured and is a pleasure and a joy to watch. Just imagine the skill level of hand to eye coordination it requires?

I have become a regular down at our local pub and want to say a special thanks to my new friend "Tinker" the dog. He has helped me make some excellent new friends. Big hello to Darrin and Scott (+ Nancy and Woody their beautiful boxers) who've made me feel very welcome at the Fishermans Return.

Live and let live ... they are not hurting anyone. Where has the community spirit gone??? I'd rather my children did model flying than hanging around on street corners looking for trouble (or perhaps causing it).

Perplexed of Winterton

i was up the beach last nite with my children and again talking to people and they loved watching the aircraft . in fact the couple that were watching monday nite came up again to see it last nite. every one can not see a problem with this . i think that the people causing trouble should take a hobbie up them seleves and perhaps we will be left alone . i find it very very sad.

Adding to the model flying dispute i also fly up the beach and would like to say that we always think of safety wilst flying , the planes are mostly flow over the sea and only landed on a clear runway, we have a licenced instuctor and all have bmfa insurances covering us up to 3 million pounds.

I as a model flyer would like the village to know that we are fully insured and never create a situation that is dangerous to other users of the beach. Many people have given us positive feedback whilst we have been up there.Yet comments which always come up are the dogs being left to run wild and mess wherever by their owners.Surley there are more important issues to face. I have twenty years flying experience i live in the village and will come to the next parish council meeting to explain our side of the situation. We are always very approachable for any people who are concerned and want to ask any questions.

There is more chance of being bit by an adder or catching a disease from the dog droppings than the model aircraft causing a problem,

Just like to say we have just had a lovely week stay in your lovely village, so well kept & a great Pub.
I must just add, who ever granted the planing for the new builds on the Top & Edge of the Dunes, so out of place, & the materials used so out of character of the Village, these really do spoil the character of the place.

Greetings from the U.S. I had an opportunity to visit Winterton with a friend and we had a wonderful time there on the beach... It was beautiful, clean and easily accessible.

My friend has since passed away, but I am left with beautiful memories of Winterton-On-Sea. Wonderful seaside town and village.... So very beautiful. Thank you.

Going back 58 yrs I used to visit Winterton every year to stay with my aunt Jenny(Larner), sister of Emily and Jack, and wife of Ernie Larner. Jenny lived in a converted cow shed made of stone, next to the then fish and chip shop.It had no water except an outside well, and the toilet was at the very end of the garden (a hole cut in wood) Opposite were prefabs. Does anyone remember Matty still? George?Agnes?Chrissie? Wonderful memories of the "Leicester Children" who came every year and stayed in the church hall(wouldn't be allowed now!) and Aunt Jenny made huge bowls of custard for them all! I have been coming to visit Winterton almost every year since then and still love it dearly. If I could live anywhere it would always be there. Please never change and never become commercialised.

There is a dog training school on the Caister By-pass. It is at the first
slip road of the by-pass when traveling north - ie from Yarmouth towards

Winterton is a great place to visit. The car park is at the end of beach road next to the super cafe. You would need to carry the youngster down a sandy path of about 25mts on to the beach and according to the tides the sea is very close. There is always beach ! The toilets are near the entrance to the car park. Enjoy

We are staying in Thurne this weekend and are planning on visiting your village, I would be grateful if someone could just let us know if your beach is easily accessible to pushchairs? We recently visited a beach on the north Norfolk coast and had to drag our heavily laden buggy for around a mile to reach the sea! Also, are dogs allowed off leads on the beach?
Many thanks

We have just got back from a lovely week in Winterton on Sea, I have stayed in Winterton now on 5 seperate occasions over the years and also had a lovely time, the locals are always welcoming and to be honest the weather is never an issue as there is always plenty to do come rain or shine.
On this last visit which was last week the weather was sensational, and I found some different walks to tackle.

Can anybody tell me if the excess road chippings which have been used on our village roads over the past couple of weeks are ever going to be hovered up?

Also, when are we going to have the electronic speed signs that most of the other villagers have around here. And the 20mph speed limit as requested in the Village Plan a few years ago and never mentioned since.

We visit Winterton at least once, if not twice a year when we stop at Hermanus Holiday Centre. Last year we arrived on the Friday you were holding your village quiz night and decided to attend. We were made to feel very welcome by all the locals and had a great time. We are due to visit again on Friday 1st May 2009 and wondered if there were any local events on over the bank holiday weekend. Thank you.

I enjoyed the last parish Council meeting, on the 19Th March.

The Chairman and other councillors questioned officials from First Bus who squirmed under pressure.

The meeting was a combination of serious discussion with a light hearted undertone.

As a non Winterton resident,it was a refreshing change to see a Parish Council operate in this manner. Well done

Hey
I'm 16 and have lived in Winterton my whole life
I love Winterton the way it is
But I think that the youth of winterton need more attention as they are the future
The primary school children are given a voice through the school however as the high school is in a different village there is no community link
The older people in winterton are also given a voice
As teenagers we love where we live but dont know how involved we can or cant get in village life
There should be more oppurtunities for us to get involved
How are we ever going to get involved as we get older as our enthausiasm is crushed as teens because we arent given any oppurtunities
Help us to help you in the future
Ta x

We are the proud owners of the pretty pink thatched cottage in King Street (shipstimbers) and hope when the work is finished it will be a credit to your beautiful village.
Does anyone know any of the history of this row of cottages. I haved tried the census records but it is difficult to pinpoint the actual cottage. All we know is that some ships timbers were used in the construction, and that possibly the cottages were built for Flemish fishermen. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Robbie and Joyce Woodhouse have lived in Winterton all their lives. Both are now 91 years young and Robbie is possibly the oldest living man born in Winterton .
He served for many years as a church warden, and was also for many years head bell ringer of the church bells. They will be celebrating their anniversary with their family at a dinner held in their honor. A blessing service will be held at the church on Sat afternoon.

We were so enthralled by your lovely village that we have booked a cottage in Winterton for the February half-term and we are all really excited to be coming back and having Winterton as our base. The credit however goes to the honest passer by who handed it in, enabling us to trace the owner through directory enquiries. Two mobile phones similarly reunited with owners in the last seven days.

I can't claim to have gone as far as Australia but I moved to South London over 40 years ago and sometimes it feels as far as Australia. I remember Winterton and that whole area from holidays with my Aunt as a child. It was/is my idea of heaven

Lot's of people have renewed old and 'lost' friends and relatives by posting a message on the Winterton Website - both from at home and abroad. I personally have spoken to one of my very best friends from my early school days who emigrated some 40 years ago to Australia

It costs absolutely nothing to write to us. Why not give it a go? What have you got to loose?

Lately ive become very interested in returning to Great Yarmouth. My Mother is from Stokesby and my grandparents had a lovely cottage and farm there. We lived in Malta, a small island just under Italy but i miss England dearly. When my parents decided to move to Malta we still visited my nan and grandad twice a year for a month at a time and during christmas times we sometimes went to a restaurant called the highwayman which i believe is in Winterton on sea. Im planning to fly back there in June or July with my husband and our 2 young children. I do hope this restaurant is still there as ide love to bring back all those wonderful childhood memories by visiting many places i havent visited for years now since my grandparents died. Hope you all had a wonderful Xmas.... Becky. xx

Dzien dobry Wszystkim! I’m Ewa and I come from Poland. I moved to Winterton last May together with my husband Jerry. From the very first day we knew that it was the right choice. People in Winterton are very friendly and open. I was feeling welcome when I joined The Gardening club, where everyone is so helpful (I’ve never had a garden before, so the professional advice is what I need, thank you everyone from the club). Our village church community also made me feel very welcome, thank you. People from Winterton and also both shops, fish&chips, café and the pub - all this makes Winterton a place where I would move to again, again and again :-). Merry Christmas or as we say in my country – WESOLYCH SWIAT!!!

I would like to wish all in WINTERTON a very happy Christmas and healthy new year. I first moved to Winterton in 1950 when I was 3 along with my mum and dad plus baby sister. My dad was a coastguard and we lived firstly at no. 2 coastguard cottages, his name was Leslie Hodgson, we lived next door to the other coastguard Samuel Christmas Halfnight. The village was a wonderfull place to live and we made lifetime friends, who sadly at not amongst us no longer, although I feel sure there must be some who are still around and will remember the HODGSON'S My mum Peggy, sister Janice and myself, if you do please contact me either by email or my home number is 01538 722652, I hope to hear from someone.

A beautiful village that is very special and dear to my heart. My King family has spent the last 300 years in the village & Winterton has been the basis of the family I am now able to trace in my genealogical quest..
I would dearly to be in contact with some of you that are in the village. If anyone is able or willing to help me in my quest I would be greatly appreciative.
nathan.king@wapl.com.au is my email..
Nearly all of my ancestors have either been christened, married or buried in the beautiful Holy Trinity & All Saints church..
I would dearly love to be back there again..
Kindest Regards and hope to hear from you soon

Out of all the villages in the nr29 area i find winterton the most pleasent! i have lived here for the whole 12 years of my life so far and have never had a dull moment! It seems most people who live in winterton love gardening so it is a real pleaure to walk round the village and see all the plants taken care of. At halloween it is great to see loads of people with pumpkins and decorations and at Christmas especially so many people have lights and things ready for the festive season.i hope never to leave winterton as all the people are so kind and it has beutiful nature. We also sometimes get rare birds, the other day i saw a Blacked Capped Warbler, eating out of a coconut filled with peanuts! So thanks winterton for giving me such a lovely place to grow up.

My concern for the future benefit of the residents and the Village is the present Village Hall and its lack of amenities. Some other villages have had the pleasure of funding to build a new hall with modern facilities. Having had the pleasure of Chairman of the Village Hall Committee for a period I appreciate the hard work put in by those who volunteer to keep this hall available for the Village. I also appreciate that a recent attempt to raise funding to build a 'Hall' at the sports field failed to materialise and again a lot of time and hard work was required by volunteers to take steps to apply for funding. I ask "Do we want" and "would we like" a Hall of an appropriate size with modern facilities for all ages, groups and residents to use for a variety of reasons.

I have been living in Winterton since i was 4 years old and have enjoyed going to the different places e.g the Park, the Beach and Duffles Pond. I am proud to live in such a beautiful and happy village. I am now 11 years old and am still enjoying the village fully. My sister is four and is going to Winterton Primary School and is loving it just as i did. Everyone is always kind and says hello. I always look forward to Winterton in bloom as the villiage becomes full of colour. I look forward to all the activities and decorations for christmas as they are always spectacular. Even if i had a choice i would n't want to live anywhere else in the world. I am glad this is my home.

re.parking charges at Winterton.I must take issue with you re.your comment"lets fleece the tourists".From May until September they,or even you for that matter can park from 9am-7pm for £2.50p--25p per hour!! GOSH-that is expensive!!Or 80p for 1 hour!Where do you normally park for less?Weekdays during the Winter parking is by donation to the wonderful voluntary coastal watch.Do you know of any other private--YES PRIVATE business who would help a charity in this way?Or spend a huge amount to preserve and prevent flooding on the car park to try to keep this beautiful part of our coastline?Do come to Winterton,David safe in the knowledge that your astronomical car parking charges are helping to save the place which you profess to love so much.

Hi David re parking charges - if you are pushed to find 80p for an hour's safe parking I would suggest that you leave your car at home . There aren't many carparks on the coast that are so reasonably priced-remember you have use of the public toilets and the coastwatch boys on hand if you are ever in need of assistance.

What is the car park fee now, £2/2.50 per day, and you call this expensive. For this you get our beach, our dunes, our wild life and our hospitality - AND YOU CALL THIS EXPENSIVE!!

Usually I go to youth club and I do not know many youth clubs around here. I also go to the post office and get yummy sweets! At winterton school when the fete is on I like to go to them and get cakes, sweets, burgers, hot dogs and toys. There is not much about the village that a don't like but I really like the dog poo on the pavements, the grass and on the beach.

I want to blow our trumpet.........I have lived in the village from the age of 1 untill 10 right now.I went to school here and I loved it, then I had to leave to go to the middle school.I like winterton because all the children know each other.I like the park because it quite big and it has a obstacle course, a egg cup, the monkey bars, a round-about, a horse that rocks back and forth, a big silde, a house and four swings. I really like the beach because in the summer we always go down with are friends for a few hours. The little cafe right next to the beach is just perfect for a drink and a ice cream when you need it.The fish and chip shop here is very good and they are the best fish and chip I have so far.............continued on next page.................

I would like to introduce myself as the new head of Winterton Primary School. My name is Richard Endall and I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to become involved in village life, here in this lovely coastal village. I am very keen for the school to become involved in any local projects that might be suitable for our children. I would be keen to talk with anyone who feels that they could work together with the school. We now have a new website www.winterton.norfolk.sch.uk where you will find more information about the school and its work. I would be most grateful if the school details available on this website could be updated. I have put in a link to the village website and I would be more than happy to link any other organisations. Re Seal Hospital
Perhaps Lisa should have spoken to her parents before commenting anonymously and so naively .The word "apparently " implies that the comments are not at first hand and hearsay.Let me set the record straight. There are pot holes on the road , the yard is overgrown with weeds, and the place smells ; continence is not one of the seal's more endearing attributes.Papworth it aint !With chronic lack of funding, it's all down to priorities; a choice between cosmetics , food and medication ,both of which are cripplingly expensive. Harry ,( the ol man )will never win any prizes for man management nor be nominated for diplomat of the year, but in my ten years at the beach as a Coastwatch Watchkeeper he has never failed to turn out within the hour, CONTINUED

This community needs to do something about the seal centre down the road...there was a Yank from London who came to volunteer and the ol man runnin the place turned him away..apparently the place is in shambles and needs money but the way this place is being run wont help turn the place around..i think this is a real issue for the community and the place should either be shut down or taken over by the Parish or RSPCA

I am a previous resident of Winterton and am trying to find anyone who can tell me if they remember anymore of the poem/song which I think was sung by “Pussy and the Cats”, a group of Norwich artists who used to camp in the valley when the Fisherman’s Return was known by all as just “Kitty’s”. Anyone who remembers them will remember a pub full to the rafters with a tea chest double base, fun for all, and probably a sore head from too much cider or “Lacons” beers.

If anyone can help please contact me at keithpuk@yahoo.co.uk

I spent many holidays in the 50's and 60's at Winterton, where my father's family lived. I remember Grandad's cottage in Providence Row, eating the freshly caught little brown shrimps for tea, playing french cricket on the back hills and trying to climb the lookout post. I have returned over the years (though not nearly often enough!) and have been delighted to find that it still remains true to my memories. I'll come back again when I can and sit on Uncle Henry's bench and maybe I can write a song about my childhood memories. I hope that isn't too long, I wish I lived nearer.

We recently spent three nights at Hermanus. Having never experienced the Norfolk coastline at all I now know how beautiful it is, a paradise and how lucky to stay at Winterton, a truly unspoilt place. We had lunch a The Fisherman, coffee and cakes at the cafe on the dunes and came home so relaxed. Thank you Winterton for a lovely time.

Lynn's e mail prompted me to write. As a regular dog walker at Winterton. I have more reason than most to be grateful. On Easter Sunday I was lost deep in the dunes in a blizzard, could not see my hand in front of my face, and lost all landmarks and sense of direction. I was in a bit of a panic, not knowing which direction to go. I had the Coast Watch number [which I recommend] on my mobile, and a calm and reasoned voice talked me back to the safety of the car park. It all sounds a bit silly now, but it was a frightening experience just like being in a London fog. Winterton really is "a village to be proud" with people like that at the helm.

I would like to thank all the staff at Coastwatch for their presence and dedication to their service. I am a round-the-year dog walker and its a peace of mind in being able to walk my dog in such beautiful surroundings whilst under the watchful eye of staff at Winterton Coastwatch. A big round of thanks also to the owners of the carpark for permitting Coastwatch to open and collect donations for carparking during the winter season - being able to park safely, having access to both assistance and services (toilets and a seasonal cafe) makes this a haven.

I visited your beautiful village on a weekend trip on the 14/03/2008. I stayed with friends in the old part of the village. I can only say that everyone I met were all very welcoming and friendly. I enjoyed being able to take a look inside the old parish church which is quite lovely and I signed the guestbook which I think is a fantastic idea. The local pub made a fine welcome too after a long walk around the village. I hope to visit with my family next time in the summer where I have heard is quite stunning with all the flowers in bloom.

Good morning Paul, Many people in the village have been upset by the recent spate of graffiti. Fortunately there was witness and names given. The police have visited the miscreant who to his credit admitted to the act and fully assisted with the enquiry. A parent was present.Graffiti is considered "criminal damage" and a fine up to £3000 can be imposed and of course is on record.Warnings regarding future conduct were given and it is to be hoped that they will be listened to. The other offender is stil to be visited. Ours is a village to be proud of but we need your help to keep it that way.If you witness a crime tell the police or at least your council.

As the Winterton On Sea Mercury Co-respondent I become frustrated by individuals and groups failing to provide information of events or regular meetings and then complain when a lack of support is shown for their event. To advertise an event in the Village Life of the Mercury is free and requires merely the particulars communicated to me before Mondays each week.
